Tallulah’s Ride (2018)

Recently coming into contact with a black stallion, I was struck by the rhythms of the horse's various gaits; trot, canter and gallop, and how effectively these would translate to dancelike musical material. My choice of both the versatile and sinuous clarinet, and of two dancers moving in prancing format, heighten this sense of equine vitality.

(Arya’s Journey) - University of Auckland Douglas Lilburn Trust Composition Composition. Performed by Grace McKenzie, Richard Paull, Caroline Norman, and Joshua Taylor

Arya’s Journey (2017)

This whimsical string quartet work follows the adventures of our new puppy Arya, from birth, through calm spells to more boisterous and exploratory moments, in which the string texture becomes more active, to a sleepy finale. The opening on viola is reflective in tone, but leads to more lively textures using sul punticello and ricochet.
